It is said that approximately 40 million Americans, mostly women, suffer from varicose veins. This is a medical condition that is caused by insufficient blood flow through certain blood veins to become weak and not work properly. This can result in swollen blood veins that appear dark blue or purple, and are often twisted and bulging through the skin.
Varicose veins can be caused from many different scenarios including pregnancy, setting or standing for long periods of time or obesity. The veins affected are usually superficial (or close to the surface), and are most often found in the legs. These veins in the legs can be very unsightly and may or may not cause pain. The lack of proper circulation through the blood veins can result in many health problems such as blood clots or leg ulcers. This is especially true if the problem is ignored for long periods of time. Wearing compression stockings can effectively slow down or even prevent the occurrence and/or progression of varicose veins.
These specialized stockings are made of elastic and are used as a type of compression therapy for vein related problems. The compression stockings can be used for many things, such as after sclerotherapy surgery, deep vein thrombosis, and chronic vein insufficiency. It has been shown that compression stockings are medically effective types of compression therapy for these types of issues.
While there is a possibility that compression therapy will not work on some cases and laser therapy may be necessary, a doctor may prescribe compression stockings if he or she feels that type of compression therapy will help with the patient's varicose vein condition. There are many different varieties and brands of compression stockings and they can be readily found at most medical supply stores, some department stores, and online.
